Bells of the North Morris Dancers English Morris dancing
Bells of the North is a women's dance group performing traditional Morris dances, which were popular during Shakespeare's time and became popular in the U.S. after World War II. Performed by sets of four, six, or eight dancers to the accompaniment of live music, each dancer wears bells on her shins that jingle in rhythm to the dance. In some dances we carry long sticks and clash them to the beat; in others white handkerchiefs float gracefully through the movements of a dance. Many of the dancers believe that Morris dancing, in addition to being fun to watch and do, brings good luck and fertility to the community.
Available: Evenings and weekends during the spring and summer. Weekday lunch time performances are possible in the Twin Cities metro areas; mileage restrictions: generally within 250 miles of the Twin Cities on weekends, farther if overnight accommodations can be provided; twelve to sixteen dancers usually attend each performance; a minimum of nine are needed for a 30-minute set.
Space: Minimum of 20 by 20 ft. of open area, indoors or out. If outdoors, surface must be level and as smooth as possible. Grass or hard surfaces are acceptable. If indoors, ceilings must be a minimum of eight feet high, with no hanging lamps (to allow for dance movements with long sticks). If we dance on a raised stage, it must be sturdy and level. Sound amplification usually is not needed.
Fee: $150 per 30-minute performance; negotiable. Mileage costs additional for performaces more than 50 miles from the Twin Cities.
