Drei Groschen Klezmorim
Jewish klezmer
Klezmer is the Jewish art form which developed in Eastern Europe during the eighteenth century, reached its height at the close of the
nineteenth century, and spread to the United States with the immigration that followed. It is primarily dance music, originally played at holiday and life-cycle occasions such as weddings. Today it includes music from Jewish sources, along with music from coexisting non-Jewish folk cultures.
Our basic repertoire is the traditional dance music of the klezmorim here in the United States and in the Old Country. We have also
developed a repertoire of recently composed music and are adding klezmer-style arrangements of popular music by Jewish musicians. We take the name of our band from the well-known work Three Penny Opera by the German-Jewish composer Kurt Weil, both for the musical inspiration he contributed and the social philosophy of the work's playwright, Bertold Brecht. As a trio we are performers of the violin, accordion, and bass.
Available: We are mainly available evenings and weekends.
Space: We have no particular space requirements. We generally bring our own sound system and include that in the fee.
Fee: $400 for first hour of performance. If we add a singer the fee rises $100. Additional performance time fees are negotiable. Added fee for travel beyond the Twin Cities.
