Native American Pow Wow Regalia
I was born on the White Earth Reservation where I soaked up the traditional cultures of my parents. My father was from the White Earth band, and mother was from the Mille Lacs band. I watched my mother and other elders make clothing and several kinds of traditional art forms, and I have continued my education with other masters. I create a lot of pow wow regalia (clothing, beadwork, moccasins, etc.) and get ideas by participating in pow wows. Jingle dresses are my specialty. One of my works is at the Smithsonian Institute; others are on display in area museums, and many are worn by dancers at pow wows.
I see myself as any artist would, picking colors and deciding on patterns. However, I am committed to the tradition of Ojibwe people, and I maintain interests in other tribal arts. My mother told me that working on a garment by hand gives it life. That is why I hand sew almost all of my work. My work is very personal. Those who see a lot of dance regalia and beadwork will recognize mine.
