Paul Wilson and Mary Abendroth
Scandinavian music
Clad in traditional costume, we perform a musical celebration of Scandinavian song and dance, spiced with a little bit of Midwestern humor. Audiences usually comment that our programs make them feel "at home" or "just plain good!" Performing on the fiddle, accordion, pump organ, and guitar, we play dance music and accompany ourselves as we sing in songs in "Swinglish," English, Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish. We always provide translation and historical context for our songs. We also perform and teach a variety of folk dances for school residencies and for community celebrations around the Midwest. We have performed for midsommar (midsummer) celebrations from New York City to Junction City, Oregon. We have appeared on "A Prairie Home Companion" and are featured on the 1998 Smithsonian Folkways recording, "The Mississippi: River of Song." Paul is the leader of two traditional Scandanavian folk music groups, Skålmusik and Skål Klubben, and is the founder of Nisswa-stämman, an annual Scandinavian folk music festival in early June in Nisswa, Minnesota. Paul and Mary have one solo recording, and five group recordings on the Timmerhus label.
