Rachel Nelson
American old-time string band
Old-time folk musician Rachel Nelson is passionate about live performance. Calling performance a "vanishing tradition," she delights in exchanging energy with her audiences. Playing fiddle, banjo, guitar, and washtub bass, Nelson sings music and tells stories from the Appalachian and American string band tradition, a tradition very much alive today, having a continuous arc from its old English, Celtic, and African-American roots to its modern songwriters. As "Bard:Live!" Nelson composes new tunes and songs within the stringband traditions. And she enjoys drawing on blues and jazz influences to find new arrangements for traditional tunes. Nelson's solo act is a "variety show" with theatrical hijinks and stories in the grand tradition of stringband entertainment. In addition to her solo act, she also tours with a guitar/mandolin player.
